Present and Past Participle

The present participle is often referred to as the '-ing' form of the verb.
Present participles are used for continuous (or progressive) tenses. These include the present continuous, past continuous and future continuous.

1.      The sun was shining so I went for a walk.
2.      The man speaking English is our teacher.
3.      He is smiling to you.
4.      That movies was extremely exciting.
5.      Those toddlers have been sleeping for an hour.

Past participles are used in a similar manner to present participles.
Past participles are used with simple perfect tenses (continuous perfect or progressive perfect tenses take the participle 'been' + the present participle - have been playing, will have been working, etc.).

1.      They had left for California before she called.
2.      I will have bought the clothes by tomorrow evening.
3.      The labors had been demonstrating for two hours before you came.
4.      They had left for California before she called.
5.      Mary was talking on the telephone when I came home.
