A.    Subjunctive adalah kata kerja yang digunakan untuk membayangkan akibat dari sesuatu yang tidak ada atau tidak terjadi, yang dapat berupa wish (harapan), requirements (kebutuhan), dan suggestion (saran). Atau dengan kata lain, makna kalimat subjunctive ini selalu berlawanan dengan kenyataan atau fakta.

B.      Future
Rumus : S1 + wish + S2 + could/would + Verb1.
Contoh :
·         I wish you would stop saying that.
·         I wish she would come to my party to night
·         I wish you would come to the party tonight.
·         I wish you would go there tomorrow.

C.     Present
Rumus : S1 + wish + S2 + V2/were
Ø  Wish
Subject (1) + wish + Subject (2) + Verb 2 / were
·         I wish you visited me.
·         I wish you were old enough to marry me.
·         They wish they didn’t have to go to school today.
·         I wish he were here.
·         I wish I knew the answer.

Ø  As if /As though
Subject (1) + Verb 1 + as if + Subject (2) + Verb2 / were
·         The girl dresses as if it were summer now.
·         She talks as though she knew everything.
·         She acts as if she were beautiful.

Ø  Would rather        
Subject (1) + would rather + Subject (2) + Verb 2 / were
·         Shelly would rather he told the truth.
·         I would rather you thought it carefully now.
·         I would rather I stayed wih my parents.

Ø  If only
If only + Subject + Verb 2
·         If only she knew.
·         If only I were rich.
·         If only I loved him deeply.


D.    Past
Rumus : S1+ wished + S2 + had V3/could have V3
Contoh :

Ø  Wish
Subject (1) + wished + Subject (2) + Had + Verb 3 / been
·         She wished she had had more time last night.
·         I wished she had been here.
·         I wished I had gone abroad.
·         We wish he had written a letter to us last week.


Ø  As if /As though  
Subject (1) + Verb 2 + as if + Had + Verb 3 / been
·         Jeff looked as though he had seen a ghost.
·         He acted as if he had owned the place.
·         We pretended as though we had lived in this place for a long.

Ø  Would rather        
Subject (1) + would rather + Subject 2 + Had + Verb 3 / been
·         I would rather he had been here.
·         I would rather she had gone to my party.
·         I would rather they had chosen him as a chairman.

Ø  If only      
If only + Subject + Had + Verb 3 / been
·         If only Rachel had not been at home last night.
·         If only he had been very kind.
